People Are Funny
"People are funny" Mama always said. When you get my age, she would tell us when we were young, you can count your true friends on one hand. When I was in elementary school, that was probably true. But, WHEN I got to high school, well forget that! The more popular I became (and that was my high school top priority) the more "friends" I claimed. What was Mama talkin' about? I had lots of friends, brunettes and blondes, who all "understood" me. We all talked the same language, walked the same walk, wore the same clothes, tried out for the same cheerleading squad, disliked the same teachers, blew the same exams. What was Mama talkin' about? And then, I began to get a clue. It all began over a boy, one boy and several of us girls. There were more of us than there were of those worth fightin' over, and my best friend and I just happened to like the same one. But he claimed to like me first, so naturally, she backed off, or so I thought. Until - I left for the weekend, and when I came back they had been skinny-dippin together and suddenly one of my "friends" was no longer so friendly to me, nor I to her. Gradually, more and more distinctions grew between us girls, until I was left with just two, (not even one hand's worth!) and wouldn't you know it, twenty-five years later I am still in touch with those very same two? The skinny-dipper?? Never showed at any reunion yet. True friends, yep! Got two from left from high school. People are funny! Just like Mama said.
